Matariki, the rising of the Pleiades star cluster, has long been associated with the celebration of the Māori New Year, which marks the start of the Aotearoa/Pacific New Year as per the lunar calendar. This year, in 2023, the stars will set on 13th of Haratua/May and will rise between the 10th and 13th of Takuru/July. The Matariki public holiday falls on Friday, 14th July 2023. Matariki, also known as “Ngā mata a te ariki Tawhirimātea” which translates to “the eyes of the god Tawhirimātea,” is a star cluster with various names across the world.
